Personalities from the Epoch of Peter I On 19-20 November, 2002, the Menshikov Palace hosted a conference marking the tercentenary of St. Petersburg, organized by the Hermitage scholars. The first day was dedicated to discussing the role of Peter I in the history of St. Petersburg. Presentations addressed Prince Aleksandr Danilovich Menshikov, the first Governor of St. Petersburg, and other remarkable personalities of the Petrine age. Conference participants discussed the history and architecture of the Menshikov Palace which served as the Governor's residence. Palace Director Vladimir V. Meshcheryakov told about the restoration of the architectural design (the princely crowns and vases which decorate the southern facade of the palace were officially opened on 22 October, 2002). Presentations made during the second day dealt with the culture and art of Russia in the 18th century. Concert of organ music was organized for the conference participants.
