Nicolas de Staël: Paintings from Museums and Private Collections of Western Europe, United States and Russia On 12 May, 2003, in the Alexander Hall of the Winter Palace (Room No. 282) opened an exhibition of the prominent French painter Nicolas de Staël (1914-1955), prepared by the Hermitage jointly with the Association Française d’Action Artistique and the Townhall of Paris with the participation of the Centre George Pompidou (Musee National d’Art Moderne), Paris; Musee d’Art Moderne, Paris; Musee d’Orsay, Paris; Musee des Beaux-Arts, Dijon; Musee Picasso, Antibes; Musee Fabre, Montpelier; Musee des Beaux-Arts, Rennes; Galerie Jeanne-Bucher; Galerie Schmit, Paris; Galerie Daniel Varennes, Geneva; Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid; Phillips Collection, Washington; Henie Onstad Kunstsenter, Hovikodden, Norway; Barilla Museum of Modern Art, Parma, Italy; Galerie Nathan, Zurich; Galerie Le Guillou, Paris; Timothy Tailor Gallery, London; and private collections of France, Britain, Russia and Switzerland. The Nicolas de Staël exhibition is Frances official project celebrating the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg. Proposed specially for the Hermitage by the artist’s son Gustave, it shows some pieces which have never been previously displayed. 52 works give an encompassing idea of the outstanding French painter’s achievement. The exhibition is supported by the French Embassy in Russia, French Consulate General in St. Petersburg, French Institute in St. Petersburg and the insurance company Morel, and sponsored by Gaz de France and GAZPROM. |
