World of Dreamings. Traditional and Modern Art of Australia

The aim of the exhibition opened in the St. Nicholas Hall of the Winter Palace is to show dynamic development of the art of Aborigines of Australia that combines both traditions dating back to thousands of years ago and modern trends. Being under the significant influence of Western art the Aboriginal art still preserves its originality. For many years it has been looked upon as an exotic feature of life of the extinct nation. Only at the end of 20th century the works of Aborigines were rescued from oblivion as real works of art. Most of the exhibits are devoted to the problem of interrelations between Aborigines and white settlers, to the self-consciousness of the indigenous people and their role in the modern world.
