The Hermitage: Museums and Collections
The Hermitage Exhibition in Lipetsk

On 18 January, 2002, a large-scale exhibition organized by the State Hermitage Museum jointly with the Lipetsk Region Museum of Local History and Art was opened in Lipetsk.

The exhibition's venue is the Lipetsk Region Museum of Local History and Art and it shows 1107 exhibits from the State Hermitage Museum which include monuments of ancient art and culture, masterpieces of West European and Russian art and rare books. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Mikhail B. Piotrovsky, Director of the State Hermitage Museum, said that the Hermitage set as one of its objectives making its collections more accessible. The exhibition held in a major industrial center of Russia with a population over half a million is the result of this policy pursued by the museum which coincided with the interests and desires of the city's administration and population. St. Petersburg and Lipetsk have the same age. In 2003, the Northern Palmyra and the city of metallurgists, both founded by Peter the Great, will celebrate their tercentenary. The great geographer Pyotr P. Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, born in the Lipetsk Region, is connected with the history of the Hermitage. He made an important contribution to the Hermitage collection by donating in 1910 a big number of canvases by Dutch painters who were not then represented in the museum. During the exhibition, major art historians from the Hermitage will give their presentations in the Lipetsk museum's rooms specially equipped with state-of-the-art technology to show computer programs including Gospel Stories, Ancient Stories, Gallery of the History of Painting, Rafael's Loggias, Fairy Tale Hermitage and Siege of Leningrad. Organizers of the exhibition prepared special lessons for schoolchildren from the Lipetsk Region. The city of Lipetsk showed great interest in the exhibition from the State Hermitage Museum. Hundreds of people, corporate and other sponsors, took part in its organization.
