Man in the Middle
On 14th September, 2002, an exhibition of some 60 works of the 20th century
art from the Deutsche Bank collection was opened in the Alexander Hall
of the Winter Palace, The State Hermitage Museum. The project prepared
by the State Hermitage Museum in collaboration with Deutsche Bank.
The Deutsche Bank collection includes about 50 thousand pieces in 911
bank offices in 43 countries, from classics of modern art of the 1910-30s
to the latest developments.
The exhibition shows drawings, paintings and sculptures of the famous
Expressionists Ernst Barlach, Max Beckman, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich
Hekel, grotesque satires of Otto Dix, Georg Groseu and Karl Hubbuch from
the 1920s, Oscar Schlemmer's stylized watercolors from the 1930s and works
of the renowned postwar masters Horst Antes, Georg Baselitz and Eugen
Schoenebeck. Drawings and bronze cast of 1961 represent the key postmodern
figure Joseph Beuss whose influence was instrumental on many important
modern artists. Photos of the 1980-90s is be an important section in the
show, introducing the specific art of this period.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, edited
by Deutsche Bank. The catalogue features essays by noted scholars from
Germany.
The exhibition is organized at The State Hermitage Museum by Dr. Piotrovski,
Director of the Hermitage, Dr. Asvaritsh, Senior Curator of the Department
of The Western European Art and Dr. Ariane Grigoteit and Mr. Friedhelm
Hütte, Curators of Deutsche Bank.
A variety of programs and educational resources will be scheduled in conjunction
with the exhibition. These will include a symposium, organized by The
State Hermitage Museum in collaboration with Goethe Institut Inter Culture
"Individual in the 20th Century", on 17 September, 2002, at
11.00 a.m. Ulrich Beck, Professor of the Munich University and famous
sociologist and critic will lecture "Dialectics of Individualization
and Globalization of Modern Life", on 26 September, 2002, at the
Hermitage Theatre, at 4.00 p.m.
The Symposium will be followed by the showing of a retrospective program
of films on the same topic. This program is free, no tickets or reservations
are required.
