Jubilee of Nikolay N. Nikulin On 7 April, 2003, Nikolay Nikolayevich Nikulin, Leading Research Assistant at the Hermitage Department of West European Art and Custodian of the Dutch Painting Collection, turned 80. Student and colleague of the outstanding art historians N.N. Punin, V.F. Levinson-Lessing and M.V. Dobroklonsky, he himself educated a few generations of the Hermitage scholars and for many years stood at the head of the Department of World Art at the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Nikolay N. Nikulin published about 200 articles, catalogues and albums about the art of Western Europe in the 15th-18th centuries. His fundamental catalogue of Dutch painting published by Aurora in 1972 became the model for all subsequent catalogues of the Hermitage collections. In 1993 he initiated the annual readings commemorating V.F. Levinson-Lessing. As a brilliant museum scholar, he took part in a number of interesting exhibitions the last of which was devoted to the German landscape painter Jacob Philipp Hakkert. Being a man of great heart and high moral standards, Nikolay N. Nikulin is the true Genius loci of our museum and we wish our dear Teacher, Colleague and Friend many years of life. |
