The Hermitage and Children: Problems of Esthetic Education in the New Century. Conference

On 27-28 November, 2001, the Hermitage School Center hosted a conference dealing with practical and theoretical aspects of the cooperation between schools and museums of St. Petersburg in the context of the current school education reforms. Among the participants were school teachers, professors of the leading educational institutions and representatives of the museums of St. Petersburg.

Themes discussed at the conference included the importance of museum and school as a single system of education in the modern cultural space and the influence of museums on the modern schoolchild's nascent personality. The participants touched upon new trends and possibilities of modern museum education promoting the child's esthetic development. Special importance was attached to the role museums play in the education of artistic taste in the epoch of the globalization of cultural space and triumph of mass culture.

Museum professionals taking part in the conference shared their extensive experience of working with St. Petersburg's schoolchildren.
