In twenty years, a beautiful city grew where there had
once been only forests, swamps, and little villages. The strong will
of Peter the Great made it Russia's "window on Europe." The
first palace that embellished the city under construction was the residence
of His Highness Governor General Prince Alexander Danilovich Menshikov,
Peter's associate and companion-in-arms. Military and trade ships with
goods from Russian and foreign cities navigated the Neva.
