Gallé's ceramics 1874-1880 Earthenware; cobalt underglaze painting; red overglaze painting and gilding This plate depicting a lady is among Gallé's early works. It has a traditional shape with undulating edges and recalls the pottery of the 18th century. The decoration is a typical example of historicism in the arts. The lady's costume is not a piece of abstract fantasy as was characteristic of the Art Nouveau, but a historically quite accurate depiction of 17th-century dress. |
