Table with an inlaid top "Flora Lotharingia"

Detail

Gallé employed an old marquetry technique common in the 18th century, but used it in a different way. In his work the pattern exists as a picture in its own right. The master works with large areas and the design is founded on bold, precisely drawn line. In some places he has filled incomplete surfaces with poker work; sometimes lines are scratched out instead. The decoration makes good use of the texture of the wood. He has introduced cuts from the roots with a speckled texture; woods with striped grain are brought together at different angles creating a play of light that generates the illusion of a host of colours in what is in reality a fairly limited range of brown shades.
