This vase was made during the period when Gallé was searching for new and unusual shapes, when he was more interested in the ever-new possibilities offered by glass than in the completed state of a work. This vase consists of separate parts that do not marry very well. Maurice Reims, one of the researchers into Gallé's work called such pieces "amusing monsters". This is a virtuoso work from the technical point of view. The body of the vase is made of five-layered glass using delicate multi-plane etching that reveals different layers in the glass and creates painterly transitions, making the image on the glass slightly blurred. Very refined and finely worked out is the cool range of colours in the glass - tender purple and lilac hues run into a milky olive and a pale blue. |
