This vase is among the group of Gallé's works that are known as verreries parlantes, due to the lines of poetry engraved on the body, in this case from Baudelaire's poem Paysage, part of the Tableaux parisiens cycle in the anthology Les Fleurs du mal. The artists did not seek to make his work an illustration of the verse, but rather presented viewers with the opportunity to construct their own chain of associations. |
