Fragment of the stone

The unusually beautiful stone known as Orsk jasper became the raw material for a vase produced in the shape of an Ancient Greek krater. The natural grain and rich colour of the stone that resembles bright autumn leaves is enhanced by magnificent ornament of gilded bronze. An exquisitely shaped grape vine twines beneath the broad mouth of the vase. Two finely chased goat’s heads with curving horns serve as handles. It is believed that this vase was created in the workshop of the architect Andrei Voronikhin who designed many masterpieces of Russian lapidary art.
