Fragment of the stone

This exceptionally beautiful and richly decorated oval bowl on a tall leg was made from grey Kalkan jasper. The turned back rim of the vase is decorated with an egg pattern, the upper part of the body with acanthus leaves and bunches of grapes, the lower part with convex lobes. The tall stem of the bowl is entwined by a grape vine. The simple Classical form of the vase is enlivened by magnificent carving that endows it with plasticity and a look of completeness. The moulded ornament underlines the natural beauty of the stone. The contrast between the polished and matt parts of the vase creates a play of light and brings out the colour and texture of the hard mineral.
The Kalkan jasper vase is one of the finest lapidary works in the Hermitage collection. It was shown at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867.
