As the 14th century drew to a close, the basinet with its pointed skull gradually began to acquire a more spherical form. The sides and back of the helmet were elongated, while around 1420 a sharp comb appeared on the crown. The result was an entirely new shape of helmet, known as the sallet or salade, that remained very popular with both knights and foot-soldiers until the end of the century.
The surface of this helmet is covered in thin sheets of gold and silver and embellished with Moorish ornament made up of complex interweavings of plant and geometrical shapes with richly and finely worked details.
