This burgonet of rare beauty and artistic execution was produced in the form of the face of a mythical beast by the Filippo Negroli, the greatest in a line of Milanese armourers. It is justly numbered among the masterpieces of Italian arms and armour from the Renaissance era. Forged from a single piece of iron, using a technique that was already lost by the end of the 16th century, it is embellished with magnificent chasing, brown “blueing” and gilding. The helmet belonged to Guidobaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino (born 1514, reigned 1538–1574). The Duke is depicted with this helmet in a portrait that belonged to the miniature collection of Archduke Ferdinand of the Tyrol. There was a breastplate to go with the helmet that is also depicted in the portrait, and also poleyns (knee guards) in the form of lions’ heads. |
