This close helmet created by the famous Augsburg craftsman Matthäus Frauenpreis the Younger is a superb example of the armourer’s art. It is outstanding for both its excellent technical characteristics and its wealth of decorative detail.
This piece belongs to the type of enclosed helmet known as the armet that came into use in Europe in the mid-15th century. Its lower edge runs into a flexible covering for the neck made up of three strips.
The splendid bands of plant ornament incorporating depictions of sea monsters, animals, grotesques and putti was produced by a combination of etching and gilding.
The helmet formed part of a suit of parade armour that could also be used in tournaments.
