In shape and construction this helmet belongs to the burgonet type and is notable for its exquisite, superbly finished decoration. The comb and rim of the helmet have a chased rib and are decorated with narrow bands of stylized ornamentation produced by chasing, engraving and gilding. The skull is decorated by chased and carved grooves in a fan pattern. The powerful artistic impact was achieved by the use of superb chasing and gilding. Both techniques were used with invariable success by the armourers of Augsburg, Nuremberg and other German centres of the craft in the 16th and 17th centuries. The helmet was in all probability part of a full set of armour. |
