The influence of China, the homeland of porcelain, on decorative and
applied art in France remained considerable throughout the 18th century.
The mysteriousness of the Orients, the elaborate clothing and gently curving,
sinuous, somewhat unsteady lines of Chinese drawing attracted the attention
of artists in all spheres of creative activity. The Sèvres factory,
which was always quick to respond to new trends in fashion, immediately
came out with some expensive and complicated experiments. The factory's
scientists and craftsmen managed to obtain a perfect black background
on hard porcelain that imitated Chinese lacquer. |
