From the late 1740s through to the end of the century, the artists of Vincennes and Sevres produced a great many designs for vases, marked by an inexhaustible variety of shapes and decoration. The model for this vase - one of the factory's earliest - was produced by that "genius of form" Jean Claude Duplessis, who was head of the modelling shop at Sevres in the 1750s. The exquisite outline of the vase, resembling an opening bud and the base embellished with moulded flowers are testimony to Duplessis's great craftsmanship and feeling for the material.
