When reproducing cameos from ancient originals on items in the service, the Sèvres factory first made use of the stencil printing method invented by Nicolas Pierre Bertheven. The Cameo Service became a sort of encyclopaedia of ancient art. The plates alone bear some 2,100 depictions of cameos. Some of the subjects are connected with a general mythological theme. Certain motifs were taken from the decoration of the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome, including the pattern used for gilt frieze on every item in the service. |
