This magnificent vase with gilded twisted handles is among the undoubted masterpieces of the Sevres factory. It gets its name from Jean-Baptiste Bachelier who acted as head of the painting and sculpture shops and was involved in the creation of models for a large number of vases and other items.
The body and high neck of the vases are decorated with enamel pearls of gold plaques applied on a deep blue (beau bleu) background. Enamel decoration like this was a rarity for Sèvres articles and mainly used on diplomatic gifts. Louis XVI gave this vase to Grand Duke Paul (the future Paul I) and his wife Maria Fiodorovna during their visit to the Sèvres porcelain factory.
