Drops of semi-transparent white enamel applied to gold plaques acquired a matte gleam that made them resemble pearls. According to the records of the Sevres factory, jeweller's enamel was first used on hard and soft porcelain in 1778 by the factory’s painter Philippe Parpette and the Swiss enameller Joseph Coteau. This method of decorating porcelain, used only in the brief period 1778-86, pleased the French Queen, Marie Antoinette, and the few pieces produced using this technique were given away on exceptional occasions. |
