1910 - 17 Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg Porcelain, stencil printing, painting with white enamel, gilding Height: 8.3 cm Depicted on a cherry-red background the badge of the Order of St George - a Greek cross of white enamel with a depiction of the saint on a horse in the centre. The Military Order of George, the Great Martyr and Bringer of Victory, was founded by Catherine II on 26 November 1769. The statutes of the order defined it as an award made exclusively for military feats. The order was divided into four classes or degrees, which made it more democratic. In 1807 an additional decoration for soldiers (the Cross of St George) was instituted, again subdivided into four classes (1856). During the First World War porcelain eggs decorated with the Cross of St George were commissioned as Easter gifts for soldiers at the front. |
