1880s Imperial Porcelain Factory, St Petersburg Porcelain, polychrome overglaze painting, enamel, gilding Height: 12.0 cm Depicted against a dark terracotta background are birds perching on the branches of a blossoming cherry-tree. Around the opening is a gilded fillet. The "flowers and birds" motif, traditional for Far Eastern art, was often employed in the decoration of Russian porcelain in the period 1870-1910. The vogue for Oriental motifs was also reflected in the finishing of porcelain Easter eggs. |
