Folding fan, in the box

1850s-1860s

Work of Hoaching

China, Canton

Ivory, tortoise-shell, mother-of-pearl, sandal wood, silver, gold and silk; filigree, gilding and carving.

Length of the fan 22 cm, length of the box 26.5 cm

Acquired in 1926-28 from the Anichkov Palace; belonged to the Empress Maria Fedorovna

The fan is made of different materials in the technique of relief and openwork carving. The guards are carved of ivory and tortoise-shell with a design of roses, chrysanthemums and forget-me-nots in high relief. The sticks are carved of ivory, tortoise-shell, sandal, white and pink mother-of-pearl in openwork and thin relief. Gold and silver filigree is ornamented with a design of flowers and a vine. The fan is fixed with elaborate gold loop and decorated with hanging silk- and silver-thread tassels with "endless" knot. The box is carved from sandal wood and decorated with figures in a landscape and leaves, and lined inside with purple velvet. A paper label on the bottom reads: "Hoaching, dealer in gold, silver, ivory, tortoise shell, mother-of-pearl, silks, Canton". So we know that the fan had been ordered from one of the best Cantonese jewellers, Hoaching, who was working in the second half of the 19th century.
