A two-sided mirror noteworthy for its sumptuousness and abundant decoration which belonged to Emperor Peter III. It was possibly presented as a gift by Empress Elizaveta Petrovna on the occasion of his marriage to the future Empress Catherine II. The twisted gilded frame of the mirror is generously decorated with silver flowers, caterpillars, butterflies, snails, and frogs which are attached to the petals and leaves. Several of them have been painted in oils. An abundance of decoration is one of the characteristic features of works by the major English silversmith Charles I Kandler (Frederick)
