One of the main forms of dinnerware was a variety of dishes for meat and fish dishes and roast game. The hot food was covered with a lid. Originally the service contained eight large dishes and 16 each of three smaller sizes (reducing in diameter by an inch each time). This dish and lid are of the third largest 12-inch size. Of the original quantity (16 dishes and 16 lids) only 15 of each have survived.
