Hollin Hall estate in Yorkshire

John Wood bought the Hollin Hall estate in Yorkshire in 1719. The old manor house was immediately replanned and reconstructed in imitation of the nearby Newby Hall (visible on the right of the scene). Newby Hall was at that time (and remains to this day) the home of the celebrated gallery of ancient sculpture acquired by William Weddell, the owner of the estate, in Italy in 1765. The interior of the gallery was created in 1767 to the design of the famous Neo-Classical architect Robert Adam. The Newby Hall collection attracted the attention of such prominent experts on Antiquity as Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Bartolomeo Cavaceppi, and its owner was an acknowledged authority in both the humanities and in the realm of artistic taste.
