Of the four large and four small lidded bowls in the service only one large one has not survived. The present exhibit is one of the smaller bowls. Such items were intended for soups and hot dishes cooked with meat, fish, mushroom or vegetable stock. The shape of the item is basically quite traditional. Similar models were used extensively in English (and indeed European) earthenware and porcelain factories in the second half of the 18th century. But the subtle alternation of convex and concave surfaces on this item and the refinement of the turned out undulating rims make it possible to speak of the modeller being one of the outstanding craftsmen of his time. |
