Both sides of the bowl carry views of the Scilly Isles to the west of Cornwall - St Mary's, the largest of the group, and St Martin's. These landscapes convey not only the natural beauties of Cornwall, but also a mood of maritime romance so characteristic of the national mentality of the British who traditionally kept somewhat aloof from the continent, preferring the open spaces of the sea and the flutter of sails. The population of St Mary's were farmers, but lived more from providing pilot services and smuggling. The views of this picturesque corner of old England bring a pleasant variety to the gallery of fashionable landscapes on the Green Frog Service. |
