Beneath an exquisite rosebud (a reminder that the artistic traditions of the Rococo had not been forgotten in the period of Neo-Classicism, but on the contrary became a permanent part of the treasury of European art) we find a view of the estate of Enville in Staffordshire. In the 18th century Enville belonged to the Earl of Stamford. It is believed that Stamford himself provided Wedgwood (whose Etruria factory was located in the same county) with drawings by the artist Anthony Devis recording numerous views of Enville. Presumably this panoramic view of the extensive estate painted on the lid of the bowl also derives from a drawing by Devis. |
