Neo-Classicism finds an occasion in everything for the display of refined taste. Its interest in details is a conceptual quality: everything should be elegant, including the artistic design of functional devices. It is no coincidence that the looping lines of the handles of Wedgwood’s bowls evoke associations with the simple, but noble shapes of the handles on ancient ceramic vessels. Neo-Classicism invariably drew upon lofty ancient tradition, but tried to soften its austerity. The antiquated simplicity of the handles on this bowl from the Green Frog Service combine superbly with the delicate ornamentality of the monochrome borders, the freshness in the depiction of the oak branches and the expressiveness of the omnipresent green frog. |
