French cuisine, which set the gastronomic fashion in Europe, had a special passion for sauces. The Green Frog Service had two types of vessels for sauces. One type was, as the name suggests, shaped like a boat. They had broad spouts for pouring the sauce onto your food and convenient tall handles. They also came with small flat oval stands to catch any drips and prevent the tablecloth being soiled. The Wedgwood service originally contained eight of these sauce boats and stands. One of the boats has not survived, but all eight stands are still in the Hermitage collection. |
