Any self-respecting connoisseur of landscape parks travelling around England in the second half of the 18th century would try to visit not only the famous park at Stowe, but also the no less celebrated Kew Gardens. Originally 29 items in the Green Frog Service were decorated with views of Kew Gardens. Losses down the years mean that we now have only 26 views. The body of the sauce boat bears a depiction of one of the park pavilions at Kew - the Temple of Bellona. At the time when Catherine II commissioned views of England from Wedgwood, Kew Gardens were delighting visitors with the variety and diversity of architectural pavilions. These included a House of Confucius, a Moorish Mosque and an exceptionally tall Chinese pagoda, built to the design of the architect William Chambers in 1761. |
