All eight sauce vessels (four large and four small) with lids and integral bases that were originally in the service have come down to us intact. Only two sauce spoons are missing. The oval shape of the pieces and the expressive sculpted details (rosebuds on the lids) were subtly conceived variations on themes already presented in the models for larger articles, particularly the soup tureens. The delicate interrelation of plastic motifs and painted decoration of the various items making up a single set was Neo-Classicism's response to the problem of making an artistic ensemble. |
