Half-hidden by luxuriant vegetation, the Rotunda in the famous park at Stowe was built in 1721 by one of the most celebrated architects of the day, Sir John Vanburgh. It is the main structure in the western part of the park. Inside the Rotunda was a gilded statue of the Medici Venus, who was considered the patron goddess of gardeners and gardening. The pictorial source for the depiction (as with other views of Stowe on items in the Green Frog Service) was one of the engravings made in 1752 by Georgå Bickham the Younger from the drawing by Jean-Baptiste Claude Chatelain: "A View from the Temple-Wood Building". |
