On the base of the tray is a depiction of Caernarvon Castle, probably the most famous castle in Wales. It owes its fame not only to its undoubted importance as a splendid monument of Romanesque and Gothic architecture (dating back to 1283), but also to being the legendary birthplace of the first English "Prince of Wales", Edward of Caernarvon, later King Edward II, who came into the world here in 1284. The pictorial source for the decoration was William Byrne's engraving "Caernarvon Castle, the Birth Place of Edward II in North Wales" (circa 1766), based on a painted original by the artist Richard Wilson. |
