In Josiah Wedgwood's time Warfield Hall and its picturesque park with shady stands of trees, broad lawns and distant panoramic views belonged to Thomas Hart. In 1832-33 the manor house was reconstructed for a new owner, General Sir John Malcolm, by the architect Sir Robert Smirke, while the park was left virtually untouched. It remains so to this day, retaining (as in the depiction on the lid of the tray from the Green Frog Service) features of that special picturesque quality that the 18th century cultivated so assiduously. |
