The Green Frog Service did not include a special centrepiece for the table. That function was performed by four impressive glaciers. Their dome-like lids were crowned by sculptural compositions of three female figures in ancient dress (the only instance of sculptural forms being included in the decoration of the service), while two pairs of striking handles enriched the austere lines. All of the original set of eight glaciers have survived. But two of the pieces have suffered serious damage: one has lost its lid; another a liner. Nevertheless the set of glaciers are still perceived as the chief adornment of the service. Like the other items in the dessert section, the glaciers are decorated with strands of ivy and lightweight ornamental borders of vertical “petals” reminiscent of ancient ova.
