Decoration of the lid

The models for the figures of the three Sibyls on the lid of the glacier were made after an engraving by the famous Italian artist Stefano della Bella (1610-64), first published in the series "Raccolta di Vasi diversi..." in 1646. In the 18th century Stefano della Bella's engravings found many admirers among masters of the applied arts. Most probably in the context of these specific Wedgwood pieces the three figures wrapped in ancient clothing were supposed to symbolize ice, cold and winter. The exquisite bridge with three arched spans depicted on the lid of the glacier was located on the Shugborough estate in Staffordshire. The pictorial source for the decoration was a drawing by Nicholas Dall.
