Fountains Abbey, founded by the Cistercians in 1132-33, ceased to function in 1539, but still today its majestic ruins remain one of the main architectural sights from the British Middle Ages, attracting numerous tourists. In the late decades of the 18th century the picturesque architecture particularly attracted artists. Three different engravings and a number of drawn views of the impressive ruins. It is believed that the present composition was based on an unknown drawing by Nicholas Dall. |
