The Harewood House estate was acquired in 1739 by Henry Lascelles, a director of the East India Company. The house was built for his son Edwin Lascelles (later 1st Earl of Harewood). The building was designed by John Carr of York, the interior decoration was carried out by 1771 by the famous architect Robert Adam, while the park was reworked in 1772-82 by the no less famous landscape gardener Lancelot "Capability" Brown. Although the house was thoroughly reconstructed in the 19th century, the Harewood House estate retained to a considerable extent the charm of the previous century. |
