From 1751 to 1761 the owner of the Gatton Park estate in Surrey was Sir James Colebrook. It was Sir James who ordered the digging of a huge striking pond resembling a lake, while his brother invited the famous gardener Lancelot "Capability" Brown to lay out a landscape park. The work lasted from 1762 to 1768. In 1774 the estate changed hands, and in 1808 the manor house was demolished. The landscape park has survived quite well, however, and the view of the estate in the Wedgwood service is a valuable record of its original topographical, landscape and architectural-artistic features. |
