St Leonard's Chapel

The body of the bowl carries a depiction of St Leonard's Chapel at Farleigh Hungerford Castle in the county of Somerset that was demolished around 1701. At the chapel one can still find the graves of the former owners of the castle, members of the Hungerford family, who bought Farleigh Castle in 1369. The pictorial source here is believed to have been a preparatory sketch by Francis Grose, later engraved by Charles Sparrow for the third volume of "Antiquities" published by Grose. Josiah Wedgwood was very familiar with that scholarly work by the local historian and talented amateur artist, antiquarian and publisher. As early as the start of 1774 the potter purchased part of the publication that was then being put out in separate issues.
