The little bowls for individual portions of dessert proved less resistant than other items in the services to the blows dealt by fate: careless treatment, merry feasts, occasional moves. The lightweight, delicate little pieces could easily be dropped and broken. That was evidently quite a frequent occurrence as of the 30 pots-à-crême that the service originally contained, only 13 bowls with lids and six more lids can now be found in the Hermitage collection.
