Caerphilly Castle (Glamorgan)

Caerphilly Castle, built in Glamorgan in the 1260s and 1270s, by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, is one of the earliest concentric castles in Wales. It produces a powerful impression, not only for the stern might of the mediaeval fortress architecture, but also on account of the ingenious and striking barrier of water in the form of a broad, deep moat surrounding the castle. The painting on the pot-à-crême, like many others, had as its pictorial source a preparatory sketch by Francis Grose for the work on the antiquities of Englanfd and Wales that he himself published.
