Caerphilly Castle, built in Glamorgan in the 1260s and 1270s, by Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, is one of the earliest concentric castles in Wales. It produces a powerful impression, not only for the stern might of the mediaeval fortress architecture, but also on account of the ingenious and striking barrier of water in the form of a broad, deep moat surrounding the castle. The painting on the pot-à-crême, like many others, had as its pictorial source a preparatory sketch by Francis Grose for the work on the antiquities of Englanfd and Wales that he himself published. |
