The Priory of St Martin the Grand, Dover)

In the year 696 Wihtred, the King of Kent, moved the chapter of canons from St Mary's Church inside Dover Castle to St Martin's outside. In the reign of Henry I, the canons were replaced by Benedictine monks and the Priory of St Martin the Grand appeared in Dover. In 1535 part of the buildings were pulled down. The decoration on the pot-à-crême shows the structures that survived as late as the mid-18th century. The artist drew upon a drawing made by Francis Grose for his publication on the antiquities of England and Wales.
