The few items in the Green Frog Service that were not to be painted with topographical views (such as the lids of the pots-à-crême) became a sort of showcase for the subtle taste and decorative sense of the artists. The harmony in the decoration of the little tondo of the lid with a spherical handle in the centre is the product of delicate proportions. The diameter of the ball handle is roughly the same as the height of the shield containing the frog. The breadth of the ring left unpainted between the handle and the wreath of ivy leaves (a characteristic feature of all the items belonging to the dessert section of the service) creates an impression of lightness. The miniature depiction of ivy strands on the handle is exquisitely inscribed within the circle. |
