Only in the decoration of the pots-à-crême does the depiction of the green frog in a heraldic shield turn from being a small, neatly placed emblem into a large decorative motif, on a compositional par with the topographical views. Like the landscape the shield is presented beneath a canopy of ivy strands, the shape of which echoes its own outline. The finely judged geometry of the composition expresses the essence of Neo-Classical aesthetics that always sought to verify harmony mathematically, but never denied the intuitive sense of beauty. |
